| 2009 Seasonal Flu Vaccine Program |
Date: Sept. 02, 2009
To: All University Employees
From: Susan Carkeek, Vice President, Human Resources
Subject: 2009 Seasonal Flu Vaccine Program
University Human Resources is pleased to provide both the 2009 seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccine to all University employees. It is important that employees plan to take both vaccines this year for the best possible protection against both types of flu.
The seasonal vaccine will be available starting next week. UVA-WorkMed staff will administer the seasonal flu vaccine at multiple times and locations across Grounds to make it as convenient as possible.
Based on CDC guidelines and H1N1 vaccine availability, the University will offer similar access to H1N1 vaccinations. Health care workers and critical infrastructure workers will receive the vaccine first, followed by the 19- to 24-year-olds. Once the H1N1 vaccine becomes more widely available, the vaccination program will be widened to include the rest of the University community. For a UVA Today story on the University’s preparation for the flu season, visit http://www.virginia.edu/uvatoday/newsRelease.php?id=9501. Information about H1N1 can be found at http://www.virginia.edu/emergency/h1n1.html.
If you have clinical questions regarding the seasonal flu vaccine and who should or should not get the shot, please call 243-0076. Please note: if you are pregnant or breast feeding please receive clearance from your doctor before requesting the seasonal flu shot.
If you have questions regarding receiving the shot, please call the Office of Employee Benefits at 924-4392.
(Please be prepared to show identification at the seasonal flu shot location)

Yearly influenza immunizations are important. Influenza (“the flu”) epidemics can cause sufficient illness among unprotected employees to disrupt essential services of the University, as well as cause emotional distress as you care for your families and friends who become ill. The seasonal flu can be very dangerous for the very young and the elderly.
Clearly the most effective method for protecting employees from influenza infections and their consequences is yearly immunization. The influenza vaccine must be given on an annual basis, because the vaccine formula is altered each year to reflect recently circulating strains.
Please consider taking the seasonal flu vaccine this year. It is one of the easiest and best ways to protect yourself and your family, friends, and co-workers from seasonal illness.
