Short Term Disability for Employees in the Optional Retirement Plan
Most faculty at U.Va. participate in an Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), also known as the Faculty Retirement Plan (FRP), with one of three vendors: TIAA-CREF, Fidelity, or Vanguard. For Faculty in the ORP, and for University Staff who can elect the ORP, a new short-term disability (STD) program is being implemented, effective Dec. 21, 2009. Short-term disability is generally described as a type of "sick" leave for absences of more than five days, including maternity leave. The new, managed plan will replace the current practice of six months of "sick" leave/short-term disability for faculty. This provides more consistent application of the benefit across Grounds.

The ORP STD benefit plan applies to all employees enrolled in the ORP, including both teaching and research (T&R) and administrative and professional (A&P) faculty and University Staff.

For University Staff in the ORP

For University Staff in the ORP STD plan, salary will be continued on a graded schedule that phases benefits over time. The table below shows the leave accrual for University Staff, along with the number of days of accrued leave that will be needed to fully supplement income for the duration of the STD benefit period.

The University Staff ORP STD benefit features a greater salary continuation schedule than the current schedule provided to employees (mostly staff) in the Virginia Sick and Disability Plan, associated with the Virginia Retirement System. Like the VSDP, the new plan has a 5 business day waiting period before the benefit coverage begins. For University Staff, incidental use of leave for short-term absences of less than five days, such as two sick days for the flu or one day off to care for a sick child, will be charged to the new leave program balance. For more information on the new University Staff Leave Plan, see here.

For Faculty in the ORP

Current and future faculty employees (including those A&P faculty who convert to University Staff) will retain the 100% salary continuation for the approved leave period with no waiting period.
