Program Description
HOOS Managing the U.Va. Way is a seminar-based learning experience that provides opportunities for manager networking and engagement as well as practical skills for managerial success. The program is designed to build managers’ decision-making capacity, give them the tools to navigate challenges, and teach them how to be comfortable with changing strategic and operational priorities. U.Va. managers will apply critical thinking and decision-making in actual case studies in the four functional areas listed below:
- Financial Management & Budgeting at U.Va.
- Human Resources Management
- Infrastructure Management (Facilities Management, IT, Risk Management)
- Management of External Constituencies (Parents, Press, Students)

Who Should Participate?
The program is targeted to:
- U.Va. managers with two to five years of managerial experience.
- Managers must be performing at or above expectation.
What Is Required Of The Participant?
Each participant will be required to:
- Attend all workshop sessions.
- Arrive on time and stay through the close of each session.
- Actively engage in class; share experiences, ideas and challenges.
- Complete on-the-job exercises between sessions.
- Complete a pre- and post-assessment.
- Discuss professional development opportunities with managers.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding issues and concerns shared by participants.
- Network with seminar participants.
What Is Required Of The Participant’s Manager?
Each participant’s manager will be expected to:
- Nominate employees for participation in the program
- Sign a commitment of support
- Attend opening and closing session to learn more about the program objectives and requirements and attend a graduation ceremony to recognize participants and acknowledge their successful program completion
- Support the participant’s attendance at all scheduled sessions. Discuss workload expectations with the participant in advance so that the participant can be successful in both the job and the program
- Encourage the participant to practice skills, information, and concepts learned in the program
- Discuss the participant’s professional development opportunities
- Complete a pre- and post-program assessment
We know that having a valued manager away from work to attend class sessions can be challenging. Your support of your direct report’s development in the short run will enable the participant to build managerial decision-making capacities and increase his or her productivity and effectiveness in the long run.
