Supervisory Essentials Certification Program

Program Description
Supervisory Essentials is designed to give new supervisors a foundation in human resources management. The program consists of four one-day classes that cover information needed immediately after assuming a supervisory role.  The goal of the program is to improve the effectiveness of supervision throughout the University and to ensure the supervisor’s success in our University environment.  A certificate will be issued upon completion of the series.  It is recommended that all 4 classes be taken in sequence.

  • Launching the New Employee
  • Performance Management & Evaluation

Who Should Participate?

The ideal participant is a University supervisor with a year or less of supervisory experience.  However, University supervisors with more years of experience may enroll in the program if space is available.  Employees who are assigned human resources responsibilities may also enroll.

What Is Required of the Participant?
  • Attend all sessions and stay throughout completion of each session
  • Arrive on time
  • Participate in class discussion; share your experiences
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding issues shared by participants
What Is Required of the Participant’s Manager?

  • Support the participant’s attendance at all scheduled session.  Discuss workload expectations in advance so that the participant can be successful in both the job and the program
  • Encourage the participant to practice the knowledge, skills and information learned in the program
  • Encourage participation in future professional development opportunities

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Q. How many participants will there be in each session?
A: Each class can accommodate 18 participants.

Q: How much time will be required to participate in the program?
A: The overall time commitment is four full days (8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.) Meeting dates are usually on Thursday’s, but on occasion classes have been moved to Tuesday’s. It is important for both the participant and the supervisor to understand the commitment.

Q: What if the session I register for is filled to capacity? Will there be other opportunities to attend?
A: Yes.  If your preferred session is filled to capacity, your registration will be moved to the next available session.

Q: Which job titles are allowed to participate in the program?

A: Registrations are accepted from employees who supervise University or classified staff employees. The ideal participant is a University supervisor with a year or less of supervisory experience.  However, University supervisors with more years of experience may enroll in the program if space is available.  Employees who are assigned human resources responsibilities may also enroll if space is available.

Q: Why do I need to sign the registration form?
A: You are asked to sign the registration form to confirm that you understand the program requirements and that you agree to attend all sessions.

Q: The requirements say 100 percent attendance.  What if something unexpected occurs in my job or home life?  If I miss a session, will I fail the program?
A: No. For true emergencies, University Human Resources will certainly work with you to determine a make-up date. Please note that missed sessions should be for emergencies only.

Q: Do I have to be a University employee to participate in the program?
A: Yes

Q: Is this program open to employees of the University Health Systems Medical Center?
A: No, not at this time.

Q: Is there a charge to my department to attend?
A: No. Participation is free.
